Shooing The Houston Flies That Are Bothering You

There's a good kind of shoofly and a bad kind of shoofly. The good kind is when you're eating a bite of gooey molasses flavored shoofly pie, preferably with a hot mug of coffee to go with it. The bad kind is when you're swatting a bunch of house flies as they swarm your kitchen. No one wants to deal with a fly infestation. Rather than pointlessly chasing flies with a swatter, take some time to learn a little more about the common housefly—and how to keep it out of your home.

House Fly Appearance

House flies are relatively small pests, no longer than about 5/16 of an inch. The females are slightly larger than the males. They're grey or black, with large, bulbous eyes. House flies don't bite; in fact, their mouth is designed to suck, and they can't bite even if they tried.

House Fly Problems

House flies are primarily a nuisance pest; however, they are also dangerous. They spread harmful bacteria and diseases such as typhoid, tuberculosis, cholera, and dysentery. Flies feed and breed on rotting organic material. They're drawn to filth, and spend a lot of time hanging around feces, dead things, and rotting food. When they get into your home, they're carrying all that filth with them and leaving it wherever they land—your kitchen, your bathroom, and anywhere else.

House Fly Prevention

To prevent house flies, follow these steps:

  • Keep your house clean and free of the decay they love so much.

  • Clean any food messes right away, and don't leave dirty dishes in the sink.

  • Don't leave food sitting out on the counter, seal in air-tight containers.

  • When you clean, clean well! Make sure your trash is in a sealed container that flies can't get to.

Cleanliness should also reach your yard since that's the first place flies will arrive. Take these preventative measures outdoors:

  • Clear your yard of debris, and never leave rotting organic matter sitting in your yard.

  • Don't plant vegetation close to your front door.

  • Clean up animal droppings often.

  • Make sure your trash containers have tight-fitting lids.

These preventative tips should help, but you may still end up battling flies. For one or two of them, the standard fly swatter may do the trick, but generally DIY products like flypaper are often inefficient and quite gross. You may be able to use a spray or trap to lower the number of flies, but you probably won't be able to eradicate the problem completely.

Luckily, we can. Modern Pest Control has been dealing with flies for years, and we know what works and what doesn't. Call for a free inspection and a safe and efficient house fly treatment, so you can go back to your eating your pie without any unwanted visitors.
