Termites Are Not The Only Insects Active This Spring

There is a lot of talk about termites in the springtime because it is the time of year when they become very active; swarming, mating, and creating new colonies. It is very important, however, to remember that there are many, and we mean many, other pests living in the Greater Houston area that are doing much of the same this spring! The professionals at Modern Pest Control believe that now is the perfect time to learn more about nuisance, damaging, biting, and/or stinging springtime pests and to take the necessary steps to protect your home, property, and family from them! Besides termites, mosquitoes, ants, and stinging insects are just some of the many other pests that are very active in the spring in Texas.

Mosquitoes

Female mosquitoes are very active in the spring and are looking for blood donations so that they can get the required protein needed to create their eggs, and make more mosquitoes. Also, both female and male mosquitoes are looking for food and like to feed on the nectar of flowers. They are attracted to properties that provide them with food, areas of standing water (the females lay their eggs on top of it), and resting areas - tall grasses and dense vegetation. Mosquitoes not only bite and leave behind red, itchy welts, they carry and transmit serious diseases.

Ants

Ants are out in big numbers foraging for food, shelter, and water sources. In general, ants feed on a wide variety of food including meats, sweets, and grease. They are often first attracted to a property because it provides them with easy access to food - unsecured garbage, gardens, compost areas, and pet food, for example. While foraging for food, they may end up making their way inside your home to feed on the crumbs and liquids found in your kitchen and pantry. Once inside, they could stay and create a satellite nest! Ants invade homes in large numbers, can contaminate food sources and are extremely difficult to eliminate without the help of a professional.

Stinging Insects

Stinging insects like bees and wasps are usually first attracted to properties that offer them a suitable place to create their nest. They then focus on finding food sources to feed their developing young and increase the size of their colony. Stinging insects can be quite active and aggressive in the spring because they are so focused on finding food sources. Care should always be taken around stinging insects; and if a nest is in an area that is dangerous for you, your family, or your pets to be around, a professional should always be contacted.
