Secret To Not Letting Mosquitoes Drive You Crazy In Your Houston Yard This Summer

Of all the flying insects, mosquitoes can be the most irritating and problematic. They are known for biting humans, sucking their blood, and leaving insanely itchy bites that take a long time to go away. They seem to be swarming around constantly, putting a damper on outdoor activities. To show how much of a nuisance they are, there’s a slew of retail products dedicated to keeping them off of our skin. Beyond that, they can transmit harmful diseases. Though they’re never really gone from the Houston area, April to October is their peak season. You can prepare for prevention now with some help from Modern Pest Control.

Mosquito Appearance & Behavior

Mosquitoes are typically about 1/8 of an inch long. They have one pair of wings, thin legs that are lengthy, and a prominent nose. Their bodies and wings are scaly. Adult mosquitoes feed on flower nectar. Females feed on blood, which assists them with producing eggs. Their larvae typically eat water organisms and flotsam.

Generally, open windows and doors are how mosquitoes make their way inside homes. They will hide in dark and low-traffic spaces until they can hunt for blood, mostly at dawn and dusk. If they get inside, you’ll likely find them fluttering around laundry rooms, sinks, and closets. Outside, they’ll be near standing water, where they breed. If your residence or business is by a marsh, pond, or lake, be on the lookout for mosquitoes.

The two main signs of infestation are hearing buzzing, and seeing bites on your skin. Human reactions to mosquito bites vary. While some individuals have mild skin irritation, others experience severe swelling or inflammation. The worst case scenario is contracting an illness such as the West Nile or Zika virus. Mosquitoes pick up West Nile from birds they nibble on. Most people who catch it don’t have symptoms, but rash, fever, vomiting, and diarrhea are indications of it. Zika is a rare condition that can cause birth defects in unborn babies. These pests can also spread multiple strands of encephalitis, which causes brain tissue inflammation and spinal cord issues.

Mosquito Prevention

There are a number of things you can do to keep mosquitoes away from your place:

  • Attempt to spray a relevant insecticide on your lawn and around your property.

  • Use candles with repelling essential oils, like lavender, peppermint, and rosemary.

  • Set and clean mosquito traps regularly.

  • Dry pet water bowls, pools, and bird feeders frequently to reduce standing water.

  • Maintain greenery and distance it from your property.

  • Clean debris from your yard and gutters.

Modern Pest Control’s Methods For Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are such stubborn critters that many preventive techniques are only mildly effective. For example, while you may eliminate standing water indoors, it’s impossible to manage the moisture from Mother Nature. With candles, the warmth and carbon monoxide can sometimes attract these bugs.

Modern Pest Control uses a unique misting system to kill mosquitoes and keep them from coming back. Our “Mistaway Systems” installation provides year-round protection. We’ll put in small cartridges that will dilute and emit an effective insecticide. It will be programmed to spray during prime times of seasonal activity. The best part is that you can operate and monitor it from an application on your smartphone. On top of all that, we’ll visit you regularly to check on things and conduct necessary refills. Don’t worry about being technologically challenged; we’ll show you how to use everything.

Help from Modern Pest Control starts with a free inspection. From there, we’ll design a custom treatment plan to fit your needs and then we'll get to work. Give us a call today, so you can enjoy the outdoors again!
