Common Signs Of A Pest Problem In My Home

Sometimes it is obvious that your home has been overrun with pests. Fruit flies, for example, can quickly take over a room or two--or the whole house. But there are some pests that stay hidden, and these can cause issues with health, belongings, or the structure of your home. It is these types of hidden (yet potentially dangerous) pests we will be focusing on today.

Signs Of Spiders

While common house spiders are pretty visible with annoying webs in many corners and their presence obvious, other, more dangerous spiders prefer to stay hidden. The brown recluse, for example. Just the name tells us that these spiders are reclusive. They build their webs to hide in. To find these spider webs you will have to look low and in recessed spaces. Brown recluse webs do not look like a typical spider web, they are a tangled mess. If you see a web like this, be careful, there may be a brown recluse hidden behind it.

Signs Of Termites

Termites are famous for remaining hidden. They don't call these creatures "silent destroyers" for nothing. While termites are easy to miss, there are a number of signs you can be on the lookout for. Termite swarmers are winged termites that have emerged from a mature nest to start new colonies. You may see these swarmers or you may see the shed white/transparent wings they leave behind. Subterranean termites build mud tubes from the soil to the wood of a home and crawl through them. These are often found on foundations in hidden places. If termite damage is extensive, doors and windows may begin to stick. And if it is severe, you will start to notice walls, ceilings, and floors that have slopes and bulges.

Signs Of Rodents

Rodents are another sneaky pest. A few signs you may notice if you have rats or mice in your home include scratching sounds inside walls, tiny droppings inside drawers and cabinets, grease marks along baseboards or on holes in the wall, or tiny footprints in flour or dust. If the infestation is large enough, you may also begin to notice a smell, as urine and feces build up.

Signs Of Cockroaches

While you may see cockroaches scurrying when you flick on a light at night, you may not know they are around unless you know the signs. Cockroach feces resemble coffee grounds or black pepper. Large roach droppings are cylindrical. Some cockroach species emit an unpleasant, oily or musty smell. Egg cases may be visible in hidden locations such as behind furniture. And the bodies of dead cockroaches may be discovered here and there if a structure is infested.

If these pests are hiding inside your home, they may be harming you or your belongings. Some spiders have the potential to cause necrotic bite wounds. Termites cost U.S. home and business owners billions of dollars a year. Rodents can cause illness, spread disease, and spark a house fire if they chew on wires inside wall voids. And cockroaches cause all sorts of health issues as well as contaminate foods.
