Preventing Flies In Houston Homes For July 4th And Beyond

It’s that time of year again—time for Independence Day parties, barbecues, and fireworks. Unfortunately, if not prepared, it can also become a nightmare because of pesky, buzzing flies.

Fly infestations can be more than just an annoyance—they can pose serious health risks if they get onto food items around your home. The chief risk house flies pose, is transmitting bacteria from the various things they land on—including rotten food, animal droppings, trash, and dead animals. If you plan on having guests over for fun and food, you must keep these food items safe from the flies that could try to land on them.

If you want to keep flies from ruining your summer festivities, keep these tips in mind when planning your next outdoor party or gathering:

  • Remove any items that can attract flies from your yard, such as rotten fruit, overflowing trash cans, pet droppings, and compost piles.

  • During parties, have guests promptly throw away empty alcohol and soda containers after they have finished.

  • Take potted plants indoors before the party, checking first to make sure that you are not inadvertently taking flies or other insects inside with them.

  • Provide guests with sealed plastic containers to throw their trash in. Dispose of all waste as quickly as possible after the party is over.

  • Clean up any spills or messes immediately after they happen.

  • Make sure all food items at your event(s) are kept covered when not being served. Refrigerate or dispose of all leftover food once the party is over.

  • Even if you’re hosting an outdoor party, make sure to keep the doors and windows of your house closed when not in use.

  • Install screens on exterior doors and windows throughout the home. Check existing screens to make sure they are free of any holes that could allow insects inside.

  • Keep an oscillating fan blowing to discourage flies from entering certain areas of your home.

  • Clean the gutters before any events to ensure proper water drainage away from the house as clogged drains can attract flies.

  • Eliminate any moisture issues present in your home, such as leaking faucets or clogged drains. Consider installing a dehumidifier in any areas of high humidity throughout the house.

  • If you live close to wooded areas, remove the bodies of any rodents or birds that could have wandered near your property and died.

  • Inspect the walls and siding of your house for any small gaps that flies could use to get inside and seal them.

  • Install flypaper around potential entry points into your home.

Keep in mind that while these prevention steps can help mitigate your risk for fly infestations, flies are an incredibly difficult pest to treat alone. If you want lasting protection against these invasive pests, your best bet is to enlist a professional pest control service for help.
